The average American uses an estimated 750 pounds of paper products every year, most of which end up in landfills. Every year, billions of trees are cut to make wood pulp for paper. A lot of paper is also made, at least in part, from old paper that people recycle. Recycled newspapers, are almost always used to make new news –papers. Unfortunately, in the United States, 9 out of 10 newspapers sold are thrown away instead of recycled! Recycling paper products make a lot of sense because:
- It reduces the amount of paper piling up in landfills. It reduces the number of trees cut down per year.
- It takes a lot less water and fuel to recycle old papers into new ones than it does to make new paper by starting with the raw materials.
HOUSE COLOUR EVENT #1
We, the Secondary V class of 2014, are organizing a House Color activity that should help raise awareness of these sorts of issues. We are going to take your recyclables and turn it into art. Bring us your old newspapers, catalogues, and megazines and we will make arm sleeve tattoos from them (paper mache style). We will have garbage bins in the school entrance, where your children can drop off the material. One bin will be designated for the Red Team and one for the Yellow Team. Points will be awarded based on how much the garbage can is filled. Points are as follows:
1/4 of the garbage can filled: 5 points
1/2 of the garbage can filled: 10 points
3/4 quarters filled: 15 points
Full garbage can filled: 20 points
Students may begin to bring their recyclables on Monday, December 09th. The deadline will be at noon on Friday, December 15th.
RESULTS:
We are pleased to announce the results of this House Color Activity. The Red and Yellow Teams tied at a total of 1/4 filled for 5 points. Thank you everyone for your participation.
